Straum unveils the Jan Mayen Titanium Edition

Straum unveils the Jan Mayen Titanium Edition

Straum is thrilled to announce the launch of the Jan Mayen Titanium collection, representing a significant evolution of its Jan Mayen design. This new collection reimagines the Jan Mayen in Grade 5 titanium and pairs it with Straum’s brand-new integrated rubber strap system, offering a completely new wearing experience.

The Straum Jan Mayen Titanium Edition comes in four core colors — Arctic Blue, Moss Green, Glacier White, and Black Sand — alongside a special edition featuring a Fratello Red dial. Originally introduced in 2023 and never produced again in its original form, this bold hue makes a return in a new material, new configuration, and updated detailing, marking it as a distinct new chapter for Jan Mayen. Available for one week only, the Straum x Fratello Jan Mayen Titanium edition pays tribute to the original while offering something entirely new.

Enhanced Case and Unmatched Comfort

The most striking update is the Jan Mayen case itself. Moving away from the original’s brushed steel, the new edition features a beadblasted Grade 5 titanium. Grade 5 titanium, an alloy of titanium, aluminum, and vanadium, provides superior strength-to-weight ratio, better scratch resistance, and improved polishing and finishing capabilities compared to Grade 2 titanium. Straum has achieved a highly refined finishing, with bead-blasted surfaces, polished accents, and razor-sharp edge definitions, striking a perfect balance between ruggedness and refinement. While maintaining its 39mm diameter, 45.8mm lug-to-lug, and 11.3mm thickness, the matte titanium surface gives the watch a stealthier, sportier presence and wears considerably lighter on the wrist. This drop in weight, combined with the supple FKM rubber strap, makes it feel more like a modern everyday tool watch.

Strap Coupling and FKM Rubber Straps

Central to this new collection is Straum’s brand-new integrated rubber strap system, featuring the innovative Straum Coupling, also in Grade 5 Titanium. This proprietary quick-release mechanism, fully designed and developed in-house, connects directly into the mid-case, allowing for fast, tool-free strap changes without compromising design. The Straum Coupling opens up a range of strap options, including rubbers and soon-to-be-released leathers.

The new Straum rubber strap, developed over a year, is crafted from fluoroelastomer (FKM), a premium material known for its durability and wear resistance. To enhance the wearing experience, the strap integrates seamlessly into the case using the Straum Coupling, and features a cleverly curved flared tip that follows the wrist’s curvature, eliminating annoying bulk.

For comfort in warm conditions, the majority of the strap is lifted above the skin to ensure great ventilation. Straum also designed the Straum Buckle—also in Grade 5 Titanium—in tandem with the straps, matching the angle of the tang and strap holes to reduce deformation and wear. The rubber straps are offered in 7 custom colors—Black, White, Grey, Beige, Dark Green, Dark Blue and Yellow—complementing the range of dials. Extensive testing was conducted to find the right balance between sturdiness and comfort, resulting in a matte, soft-touch surface that blends ruggedness with refinement.

Robust Performance and Versatile Wearability

Powering the Jan Mayen Titanium is the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement. This dateless caliber, visible through a sapphire display caseback, offers a solid 68-hour power reserve, beating at a smooth 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), and includes hacking seconds and manual winding. The movement is robust, precise, and well-suited for a watch designed to be worn actively. On the wrist, the titanium Jan Mayen is designed to “disappear in the best possible way,” offering exceptional comfort, balance, and a refreshingly understated presence. This timepiece is built for exploration and endurance, capable of withstanding demanding conditions while remaining versatile enough for everyday wear.
