Capturing nature

The Basalt Dial

The Jan Mayen Basalt Red dial is carefully crafted from volcanic basalt rock, selected for its porous, unique structure. The brittle material undergoes a multi-step process of stabilization to strengthen it without compromising its natural texture. Precision tools are used to cut ultra-thin wafers, which are then ground, polished, and treated with resin to enhance durability and achieve optical clarity.

The wafer is bonded to a vibrant red, sunburst-textured base, symbolizing the fiery magmatic world beneath Jan Mayen, and finished with a chapter ring. This process results in a truly one-of-a-kind watch face that captures the raw beauty of the basalt, showcasing nature’s powerful forces.

Volcanic origins

The Basalt Process

Every Jan Mayen Basalt dial is a piece of the island’s volcanic history, made from basalt rock collected during our expedition to the remote island of Jan Mayen. These rocks, formed from molten lava, are unique—no two dials are the same, each revealing distinct patterns created by the solidification of lava and trapped gas pockets.

Our journey to obtain these rare stones was a two-year endeavor, including a 10-day voyage to scale the Beerenberg volcano. Each basalt dial is a testament to that journey, containing a part of the island’s raw, untamed beauty.

Engineered for Durability and Comfort

Integrated Bracelet

The bracelet is custom designed and crafted from 316L stainless steel, featuring an integrated structure that tapers smoothly from 24.8mm to 18mm at the buckle for both comfort and a secure fit. Each link is CNC machined to very high tolerances, ensuring precise separation of surface finishes, while the inside edges are chamfered and polished for a comfortable, pinch-free wearing experience. The push-button butterfly clasp provides a seamless closure, and two 130% links offer added versatility for a tailored fit. Designed to perform in both rugged landscapes and urban environments, the bracelet includes a pin-and-collar system with sizing tools for easy adjustment.

Crafted for adventure

Watch Case

The Jan Mayen Basalt case is made from 316L stainless steel, offering high resistance to corrosion and wear. Measuring 39mm in diameter, it combines practicality with a balanced, comfortable fit.

The sunburst bezel frames the dial, while the double-domed sapphire crystal ensures excellent scratch resistance and clear visibility. Finished to a very high standard, the case features precise detailing, creating a refined yet durable exterior. With a screw-down crown and 10ATM water resistance, the case is designed to endure both everyday conditions and more challenging environments.

The adventure

The Journey to Jan Mayen

Our adventure began two years ago with a challenging 10-day voyage from Svalbard to the isolated island of Jan Mayen. Accessible only by boat, Jan Mayen is one of the most remote places on Earth, dominated by the towering Beerenberg volcano, the world’s northernmost active volcano. Our goal was clear: scale the volcano and collect basalt rock samples formed from ancient volcanic eruptions. Expeditions like this are rare, as most of Jan Mayen is a nature reserve. We secured special permits from the Norwegian government, ensuring that our collection of basalt was responsible and sustainable.

What is Basalt Rock?

Basalt is born from molten lava, a testament to the Earth's powerful geological forces. When lava erupts from a volcano and cools rapidly, it solidifies into this dense, black volcanic rock. As the lava cools, gas pockets become trapped inside, creating a porous and unique spongelike structure. The basalt rock we gathered on Jan Mayen is no exception—each stone carries the natural patterns formed during volcanic activity. When sliced open, these rocks reveal distinctive textures and gas pockets, making each dial truly one-of-a-kind.

Manufacturing the Basalt Dial

Creating the Jan Mayen Basalt dial is a complex, highly technical process, made possible through collaboration with experts from Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, and China. After carefully selecting basalt rocks with an open, porous structure to achieve our intended visual expression, the process became even more challenging. This low-density material is naturally brittle, making it especially difficult to work with. The rock is cut into slabs and treated with multiple rounds of stabilization to enhance its durability without compromising the delicate, natural structure. From there, it undergoes several stages of grinding, polishing, and resin impregnation, refined to its final thickness and polished to optical clarity. Precision diamond tools are required to handle the intricate cutting of the ultra-thin wafers, ensuring no damage to the fragile material. The final assembly involves bonding the basalt to the base dial, applying a chapter ring, and adding printed graphics. This demanding process, while technically challenging, results in a unique dial that captures the raw beauty of the basalt rock, showcasing the intricate balance between craftsmanship and nature's unpredictability.

Captured for posterity

Every Jan Mayen Basalt dial holds a piece of this incredible journey. The dial you see is crafted from basalt rocks that we hand-carried back from our expedition. As each rock is different, so is every dial—a unique pattern of basalt and gas pockets, never replicated. This means that no two watches are the same, each one featuring the natural character and texture of the volcanic rock, making your Jan Mayen Basalt watch a true one-off masterpiece." Expeditions like this are rare, as most of Jan Mayen is a nature reserve. We secured special permits from the Norwegian government, ensuring that our collection of basalt was responsible and sustainable.

The Spirit of Exploration

The Jan Mayen Basalt collection reflects not just the raw beauty of the island, but our passion for exploration. We believe this watch embodies the truest expression of who we are as a brand—a deep connection to nature, a respect for its untamed power, and a dedication to craftsmanship. From the treacherous waters surrounding Jan Mayen to the summit of Beerenberg, this watch carries the spirit of adventure with it, designed for those who are drawn to the world’s most uncharted territories.
